Shredding & the Environment

Does shredding have an impact on the environment? The answer is yes, and it’s a very positive one here at TrueShred, since we recycle all shredded material.

The Paper Waste Problem

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that paper products made up more than 27 percent of all municipal solid waste generation in 2010. Fortunately, it’s easy to keep paper out of the solid waste stream and landfill.

Businesses that recycle their discarded paper products are helping to keep the earth clean, healthy and sustainable—recycled paper doesn’t go to a landfill. Instead it goes into making recycled paper products which would otherwise be made from new raw materials.

When you have your confidential and sensitive paper files and documents destroyed by TrueShred, not only can you rest assured that all personally identifiable information and confidential client data has been rendered unrecoverable, but also you can know that all of the shredded byproduct has been recycled.

Save a Tree, or Better yet, an Entire Forest

By partnering with TrueShred you also fulfill an environmental responsibility. We recycle millions of pounds of paper every year.  According to the Environmental Protection Agency, each ton of recycled paper fiber saves:

  • 17 trees
  • 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space
  • 360 gallons of water
  • 60 pounds of pollutants
  • 10,400 kilowatts of electricity
  • Every ton of paper recycled can save the energy equivalent of 165 gallons of gasoline!

What Happens to the Paper Waste Shredded by TrueShred?

All of the paper waste our mobile shredding trucks generate is recycled. According to the EPA, shredded office paper is used by mills to make consumer products such as:

  • Papertowels
  • Tissue
  • Toilet tissue

In addition, mixed grade recycled paper is used as:

  • Secondary fiber in the production of new paper
  • Raw material in non-paper products such as:
    • Gypsum wallboard
    • Chipboard
    • Roofing felt
    • Cellulose insulation
    • Molded pulp products like egg cartons
